The Face(s) Of Blue Cross
November 14th, 2009“I wish … that … I knew what I know now … when I was younger.”
You’ve probably heard that bit of classic rock in those ubiquitous commercials for Blue Cross. If you’ve ever wondered about the source, you’ve come to the right place.
It’s a snippet of the title track from The Faces’ Ooh La La album. It was released in March of 1973 and made it all the way to #21 on the U.S. Billboard chart.
If you’re having a senior moment and don’t quite remember who The Faces were, they were Ron Wood (on guitar and vocals), Ronnie Lane (on vocals and bass guitar), Ian McLagan (on piano), Kenney Jones (on drums), and some guy named Rod Stewart on vocals (whatever happened to him?).
Blue Cross’ use of the song is one of the better bits of classic rock commercialism I’ve heard in a while, but this is hardly the first time this particular song has been used commercially. As Wikipedia notes, the song has been used by, among others, Nike Golf and an Irish mobile phone network.
Here’s a nice video of Ronnie Lane performing the tune.
