How Egypt Shut Down the Internet

Monday, January 31st, 2011

Among all the stories of protest and death and political ramifications and such in Egypt these past several days, you may have read that Egypt “shut down the Internet.”

How does such a thing happen? The Telegraph explains. So does Fast Company. In related news: Computerworld explains how Egyptians got online without Internet access, and V3 notes how Egypt’s shutting down of the Internet affected spam traffic.

Here’s an interesting one that arrived this morning:

I am a consultant to the Egyptian President. I am contacting you for a possible business deal based on the present political crisis in Egypt. The conglomerate of

Mohamed Hosni Mubarak is ready to partner with you to help secure the resources of the president since the office of the presidency has been dissolved.

You can read more about it on this website:

As soon as we receive your positive response we will proceed with the arrangement and provide you our terms and conditions. The deal involves huge cash movement and liquidation of foreign and local investment.

Your immediate response will be appreciated.

Mr. Mohammed Hammad

I wonder how much more of a response this will get vs. the typical Nigerian 419 scam.

I’m always looking for new and interesting ways to help manage the infinite amount of information being generated by an infinite number of monkeys creating an infinite number of Web pages, blog posts, Wall postings and tweets each day.

paper.li — which is in alpha, not even beta — is a pretty interesting one. Their home page says it well:

Read Twitter and Facebook as a daily newspaper — paper.li organizes links shared on Twitter and Facebook into an easy to read newspaper-style format.

You can access the LOHADdotcom (Twice) Daily over here. It updates twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening. If you’re in the Philly area, you might want to check out the BuxMont digital Two-A-Day.

I’m looking forward to seeing what new features the beta brings.
