Google’s Wonder Wheel

August 9th, 2010

No, Google isn’t taking over Coney Island. There’s a tool on their search results you may have missed, even though it came out more than a year ago: It’s called the Wonder Wheel, and its purpose is to simplify and arrange search results.

I find it both interesting and a little disturbing that it came out more than a year ago. I’ve probably used Google literally several thousand times since the Wonder Wheel debuted, and I only noticed it today.

I think that says something about how our online habits are so deeply embedded. We get so used to doing things (like looking at search results) a certain way, changes in those habits necessarily happen very slowly. Or maybe something like the Wonder Wheel is just an unnecessary frill on a fundamentally very utilitarian activity.
