Virtual Avatars, Real Bodies

April 29th, 2008

So what does THIS avatar say about its creator?

Techdirt alerts us to a Slashdot posting about an NPR story (how’s that for convolution?) that suggests one’s Second Life avatar can have an effect on one’s first life body.

For example, Techdirt writes, "if someone has a ‘more attractive’ avatar within a virtual world, once they leave that virtual world, they’re more likely to have higher self-esteem and believe that they’re better looking in real life as well."

Okay, fine … but what about those freaky and odd avatars?

There’s certainly some sort of a link between one’s personality or world view and one’s avatar, but I have a hunch it’s a lot more subtle and complicated than the notion that having a thin avatar drives you to exercise more.
