Badvertising

Wednesday, December 6th, 2006

This advertising is veddy, veddy bad. It's deliciously atrocious.

The talented Scott G, one of the more eloquent and insightful posters over on the Soflow forums, keeps sending me links to his articles that I never seem to get around to presenting here. Well, I’ve finally gotten around to one. Sorry it took so long, Scott.

Check out the G-Man’s suggestions for voting participants in bad advertising campaigns off the marketing island. “Badvertising” indeed. Maybe Leonard Pinth-Garnell should open up an agency.

I do think this idea needs qualification, though: age. Fresh faces in their 20s should be excused from such draconian rules. The folly of youth, learning from your mistakes, that sort of thing. But: If you’re still doing crap in your 40s or 50s? You better hope you’re not sitting across the interview table from the G-Man, or someone like him.

Marketing takeaways: How deeply do you dig into a potential new hire’s background before actually making the hire?

Boy, if they only had thought of this in the days of Belushi or Farley!

This is a really good idea and a smart way of dovetailing the Web site with the show in a way that elevates both. I hope they go through with it and, in doing so, really let it be a rehearsal, warts and all, and not try too much to present a clean show.

Got A Blog? Gotta Get Akismet

Sunday, December 3rd, 2006

your one-stop comment spam solution is here!

If you have a blog and you’re getting hammered with trackback spam or comment spam, you need Akismet. Now.

Trackback and comment spam is a huge problem. It’s been a hassle for me for a long time, though it ebbs and flows. About two months ago, a relentless new wave of spam started hitting this blog, to the tune of hundreds of bogus posts per day.

I installed the Akismet plugin for WordPress recently. Bogus posts since then? Zero. Zilch. Zip. Nada.

It’s been a long time since I’ve seen anything Web-related that’s so simple and works so well.

Takeaway for marketers: If you’re blogging, personally or corporately, you need to take a close look at Akismet. Now.

What’s In YOUR Email?

Yes, Big Brother is watching YOU!

Yesterday, new rules and amendments went into law regarding the responsibilities companies have for archiving electronic information like email, documents, photographs and more. You probably read a story like this one about it. Here’s a pretty good summary, albeit in legalese, of the implications.

It’s a good
time to be in the high-volume external storage game.
